Since its establishment, UCSC has been a leader in social justice. Because environmental issues are one of the core principles here on campus, it is no surprise that UCSC plays host to many successful programs making UCSC a leader in social and environmental justice. In 2002, College 10 was founded on the inequalities that exist in society, such as discrimination and poverty, and the role of community involvement in addressing social injustices. Classes are becoming more inclusive of food, agriculture and social justice as interlocking components. Courses in the Environmental Studies, Sociology, Community Studies, Anthropology and Legal Studies Departments and intertwining these topics, exemplifying that to have environmental justice, we first must achieve a degree of social equality.
