SEC: The Student Environmental Center
ESLP: Education for a Sustainable Living Program
CSC: Campus Sustainability Council
The Student Environmental Center (SEC) formed in 2001, birthing the Education for a Sustainable Living Program (ESLP) and the Campus Sustainability Council (CSC) two years later, all of which were created to further the student-initiated environmental movement at UC Santa Cruz. The Student Environmental Center functions using the guidelines of the Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus, a resource guide of environmentally geared projects brainstormed and published each year. These projects are implemented using funds provided by every undergraduate student at UCSC, and allocated to the organization by the Campus Sustainability Council. One of SEC's main goals is to collaborate with many other environmental organizations on our campus, primarily our own sister organization ESLP. The SEC and ESLP are student funded and run groups that practice consensus-based decision making and non-violent communication. Both organizations' primary philosophies include non-hierarchy, collaboration, accountability, transparency, personal well-being, and peer-to-peer learning. Working with ESLP, SEC, or CSC will provide an opportunity for academic and social learning, along with personal growth.
